The local history database indexes items of historical significance to Elkhart County and City. Coverage is on topics, persons, businesses, and events that have current and historical significance to the Elkhart area.
Most of the items in the database index topics or articles that have appeared in the Elkhart Truth newspaper from 2001 to the present. There is currently only partial coverage of Elkhart Truth articles earlier than 2001.
The local history index originally existed in print form in card files located in the local history/genealogy area. Information on these cards has been entered into the Local History Database. Other types of Elkhart-related resource materials are also indexed.
Obtaining Newspaper ArticlesWritten Requests
Elkhart Public Library staff will answer written requests as time permits and on a first-come, first-served, basis.
An initial fee of $5.00 will provide up to 30 minutes of research for one event, name, record, photo, etc. Fees apply whether or not an answer is found. If desired, an individual may pay up to $15 for 1.5 hours of research ($5 for each 30 minute increment). Fees include staff hours and cost of copies or scanning. We are unable to issue refunds.
Staff limitations preclude offering more than 1.5 hours of research per requester per month.
Responses will be sent via email or, if requested, via the U.S. Postal Service.
Please print and complete our Local History/Genealogy Request Form
and send it along with a check covering the required fees, and a self-addressed, stamped envelope if your response is to be via the U.S. Postal Service, to:
