The Osolo Branch Celebrates 25 Years

The Osolo Branch is 25!
~Kathy Langenhop & Moxie Robinson

It is hard to believe that a quarter of a century has passed since the Osolo Branch Library first opened its doors. We have seen many changes in 25 years, not only in how we serve you, but also in the staff who serve you. Osolo’s first manager in 1987 was Joan Murphy, with children’s librarian Jeanine Rhodes, as her assistant.

A Week of Celebration

Kevin Kilmer, Elkhart Public Library’s Branch Operations Manager, and Donna Mitschelen, Osolo Branch Coordinator, cordially invite you to join them and their staff, for a week-long Silver Anniversary Celebration October 15 through 20. Festivities will include daily prize drawings for books (winners will choose from an assortment). The Bookmobile will be onsite Friday and Saturday, full of sale books stocked by the Friends of the Elkhart Public Library, and staffed by the Osolo Branch 2nd Monday Night Page Turners Book Club.

Saturday Open House

Capping off the week will be an open house on Saturday, October 20, with hourly prize drawings for gift packs donated by local businesses. Light refreshments will be served. At 11:00 Library Director Deb Stewart, Library Board members, and representatives from the Friends of the Elkhart Public Library will dedicate a Crimson King maple tree, newly planted on the south side of the property. The tree was a gift from the Friends group, along with contributions from Osolo patrons.

Mark your calendars now – October 15-20 – and plan to join us in celebrating the Osolo Branch Library’s Silver Anniversary!

Banned Book Week

Administrator : October 1, 2012 11:19 am : Elkhart Public Library

Virtual Read-Out

This week, September 30 – October 6, 2012, marks the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of the freedom to read. To commemorate this milestone, the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom has coordinated a

50 State Salute to Banned Books Week, which included a Banned Books Virtual Read-out. People all over the country—and around the world—were encouraged to upload videos of themselves reading or discussing their favorite banned or challenged books on the special Banned Books Virtual Read-out Channel on YouTube.

Each year, the ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom records hundreds of attempts by individuals and groups to have books removed from libraries shelves and from classrooms, and compiles a list of banned or frequently challenged books.

Living in the Window

Here in Indiana, Saturday Evening Post editor Corey Michael Dalton, is living in the front window of the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library for the week, to protest the continuing ban on Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five by the Republic, Missouri school system.
